Hey Crew. Scent Semantics?
We get a word, we get a date, we have to choose a single fragrance that fits the word and then have to explain how it fits together, in our way. As much or little as we feel the word/fragrance connection needs. We are going to probe a little into how each of us bloggers see the world, fragrance, ourselves. We get to see how one word can inspire different directions in connection. or not.
LUSCIOUS Scent Semantics #3
WHOAH! LUSCIOUS is our word this month. Chosen by the brilliant Sheila Eggenberger. A perfect word to describer her, if ever there was one. So many fabulous ways to interpret it too. Overwhelming on first twirl through my brain. I thought it might be nice to have a little dictionary help, just in case I am misreading or mis-thinking exactly what luscious should represent.
luscious [ luhsh-uhs ]
adjective
- highly pleasing to the taste or smell: luscious peaches.
- richly satisfying to the senses or the mind: the luscious style of his poetry.
- richly adorned; luxurious: luscious furnishings.
- arousing physical, or sexual, desire; voluptuous:
- a luscious figure. sweet to excess; cloying.
Aha! So what my mind went straight to is also referenced in both the dictionary and notes of my chosen fragrance. I feel like there were three obvious choices for LUSCIOUS and all of them contained peach! Isn’t that interesting. Though, to be fair, none of them smell exactly like peach but they are dreams of peachy peachiness swaddled in opulent and voluptuous bit players to create their own fabulous and over the top perfumes. The three scents that perfectly reflect the word LUSCIOUS in my mind and nose are Divine EdP, Guerlain Mitsouko and Rochas Femme. All firm favourites and well spritzed beauties in my collection.
Divine EdP by Divine Parfums Paris
Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Tuberose Peach Coriander
Heart: Gardenia Rose Jasmine Spicy Notes Orange Blossom Patchouli
Base: Oakmoss Musk Sandalwood Vanilla
I often say of Divine EdP that it’s the ultimate end game of Chanel No 5. An aldehydic floral but with a luscious fruity peach open and warmer, more sensual base. If CHANEL No 5 is the society matron then Divine EdP is the Empress Tarot Card. Rich, tapestried, warm, fecund, luscious and welcoming. Divine EdP is smiling and a little bit saucy, very French with a little bit of ass showing.
It is a sweet, fruity opening made dazzling by aldehydes and given a green spicy twist by coriander and what smells like fresh cut bell peppers. The tuberose is thick and buoyed already by jasmine, orange blossom and gardenia. The notes amalgamate into a white floral bouquet that smells drizzled lavishly with homey and some spicy rose jam. The whole scent is dense and molten. LUSCIOUS is the perfect adjective for this brilliant beauty.
Directed at women but easily wearable by the boys. Longevity is excellent. For the first 2-3 hours sillage is too, later is calms to a sensual trail of vanilla rich, creamy woodsiness. Definitely cuddle worthy.
What perfume would you associate with the word LUSCIOUS?

Luscious and Divine! Plus, peach and tuberose really sound luscious. I also reached for dictionary just to make sure I won’t miss the point completely.

HA! Snap on the dictionary hunt Elena. I use words knowing how they’re placed in others and my own sentences but it’s ALWAYS good to have dictionary evidence.
I’ll be over at yours in the morning, it’s VERY late here in Sydney.

The dictionaries that you consulted all seem to have gotten the 2021/2022 memo! My dictionary app produced the most dated and ridiculous examples for luscious 😂

What a nice post, Portia! Your choices are spot on. For myself, all fragrances of Vero Kern scream luscous – or üppig. You inspired me to wear the forerunner of Guerlain’s “Nahema”, “Rozy”, today. Thanks to the musky peaches and a mossy note it is cool & warm, green & yellow at the same time.

OOOOH Anka!
I very nearly went with Rubj for this month, it’s a very LUSCIOUS event every wear.

Great word Portia.
It makes me think of tropical white florals. My favourite is Frangipani by Ormonde Jayne. It takes me to a sun-soaked island with lush plants everywhere.

Hey Tara,
Yes, Sheila came up with the goods this month!
LOVELY choice. One day we will holiday on a tropical isle and you’ll wear Frangipani! I’ll be calling out LUSCIOUS at the top of my voice as I swim in your sillage.

Ooh, my mind went straight to Mary Greenwell’s Plum, possibly because The Plum Girl is one of your collaborators. 🙂 Lots of fruits figure, including the eponymous plum – and peach!
“Plum, Peach, Black Currant, Bergamot and Amalfi Lemon; middle notes are Tuberose, Gardenia, African Orange flower, Jasmine and Rose; base notes are oak moss, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Musk and Amber.”

OOOH! I loved the Mary Greenwell perfumes. They were gone before I had a chance to FB them both.
Excellent choice Vanessa.

I love it, Portia! Nothing says cheeky like … peach perfumes! All joking aside, you did make me think that peach perfumes are almost all luscious. I thought of Péché Cardinal, Bitter Peach (terrible name), Coco …

HA! Yes, nice peach analogy! See what I did there?!?
You might be onto something though, they all have that gorgeously overblown quality. Did you ever try Amoravoro? It has it too.

Yes, it’s lusciously overblown and has that 1960s hairspray vibe running beneath it.

I think tuberose can make most scents luscious in every way. It’s such a heady, narcotic accord. Peaches, yum! Divine sounds … divine.

HA! Thanks OH, yes, it’s perfectly named. Peaches and tuberose!! So LUSCIOUS!

Oooooh, Portia – you make Divine sound truly luscious! I haven’t tried it, but now, I certainly want to. 😀 Thank YOU for making this project so much fun. Interestingly, I also thought about Rubj in a luscious context (it certainly fits the bill!), but I suspect I went with my own choice because I’m saving Rubj for something else. xo

HA! That would have been hilarious if we’d both done Rubj.
Your reminiscence about Robert was so touching and perfect. Loved it. Loved him.

With tuberose and peach, two of the notes that I do not like in perfume, one would think that I wouldn’t like Divine – and yet, surprisingly, I do. But reading your post, I suddenly thought of another perfume that fits this topic: Diva. I wouldn’t have used it for my post even had I remembered it earlier because I don’t own it. But I think that it’s a good choice.

Divine sounds divine. I don’t know why but I associate the word luscious with berries and sweet jam ( my mind always wanders to food and sweets in particular). So I would chose LExtassa Rose Absolu, Lancolm Oud Bouquet ( rose jam and praline)Molinard Musc et Fruits or Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay.

Lovely choices Brigitte. I never really thought about berries or jam in that way but now I will.
