Mood Scent 4: Fabulously Fruity

Hey there A Bottled Rose, It’s a Mood Scent 4 week. WOO HOO! This month the crew are looking at Fabulously Fruity! Woo Hoo! I’ll admit that this months theme was my idea. Little did I know how freaking hard it was going to be to whittle my selection to six. I can’t remember ever having such a hard time. The genre is so vast and covers the widest range from full on fruit bombs to subtle weavings within other stories. What I have tried to do is cover six entirely different experiences of fruit, Seriously, I could easily have had 50 perfumes listed here today, and that’s just the ones I wear regularly. There was much humming and haaing.

Mood Scent 4: Fabulously Fruity

This month I tried to pick a bunch of things you might already have in your wardrobe. So you could be reminded to go have a seriously good spritz and remember how much fun these fabulously fruity fragrances can be.

Arabie by Serge Lutens

Stewed fruit, dried fruit, fig, mandarin and dates are the featured fruits but that is less than half the story here. A spicy, sweet waft of air from dreams of a souk. Resinous, dusty, and full of lively colour and movement. You can almost hear the calls of the merchants, the swish of fabrics and the slap of shoes. Later the woods and incense seem to take over but even unto dry down there is a whisper of fruit. Definitely worth a visit to the back of your collection to remind this beauty.

Bombay Bling by Neela Vermeire Creations

As if there could be a list of fabulously fruity frags without including my beautiful friend Neela’s masterpiece, Bombay Bling, that Jin is well into his second bottle of. He even wore it on our wedding day. Mango, Litchi and blackcurrant open this tropical fruit extravaganza, so over the top and fabulous. It’s utterly bewildering. A resinous floral heart and then the most interesting turn towards a very masculine leaning dry down of patchouli, woods and tobacco with a hefty wash of vanilla. One of the most interesting life stories in all of modern perfumery.

Caligna by L’Artisan Parfumeur

The long forgotten L’Artisan fig. So totally overshadowed by its milkier sister Premier Figuier. The have very different things to offer. Caligna is a much more herbaceous fig, still creamy but with added leaf and branch. Resinous and sharply pine-y. A much less dramatic scent, more of a workhorse than a diva. It smells more like an Indie scent than from one of the world’s largest and safest niche/masstige brands. Definitely worth a sniff if you like the idea of fig but are put off by most of the fragrant offerings as too razzamataz.

Burberry Brit Woman

Pear! The first whiff of Burberry Brit Woman is almost photo realistic. It lasts a short but extremely memorable while before veering left and turning into a lightly tart pear cheesecake with a nutty biscuit base. This was a panic buy when they changed the bottle and I’m already down the first line. Such an easy, breezy fragrance that works in almost any situation. Dressed up or lounging around, I’d even mark it as a pretty safe office scent for men and women if used with a light hand on the spritzer.

Our Moment by One Direction

The blaring screech of berries in the open is about as joyful as a fragrance can smell. It screams happy times with friends just hanging out. I can’t believe what a fabulous perfume the One Direction boys brought out as their first fragrant foray. Berries, grapefruit and red currants are the named fruits and that gives you an idea of how it smells with some lightweight florals in the heart and musky amorphous woodsiness in the base. SO MUCH better than it ever needed to be.

Saturday by Arielle Shoshana

I don’t know if you ever got your sniff on this amazing concoction but if you like fruity fragrances then this is JACKPOT! Passionfruit, peach and mandarin open in a glorious, lush, nearly over ripe melange that goes really close to too much and then pulls back to AMAZING! I think the iris keeps the whole fragrance grounded. As the fireworks burn off a little you’ll notice a lovely creamy vanilla/woods base resting on a pillow of sweet musks. The bottles are super glam now but I much prefer my signed earliest edition with a hand painted lid.
